Information Technology Professional

Do you mean for work? My past roles include application developer, database administrator, system administrator, and system integrator. Many times in my career, those roles have blended together, wearing many hats at once.

Cybersecurity

Ever since I gained the Security+ certification, I have been very interested in security, especially encryption algorithm internals. Now, I’m interested in MITRE ATT&CK, and TTPs (tactics, techniques, procedures) for APTs (professional hacking groups).

In my current operational role, I am in charge of Antivirus, EDR, phishing threat analysis, anomaly detection, threat hunting, vulnerability management, application security, and user education. As second important aspect is supporting technology solutions that provide legal compliance with privacy laws, including HIPAA and GDPR.

Part of my responsibilities include GRC risk management, helping establish security policy/procedures, and implementing new security tools, to continually mature the security posture of our computing environment.

System Administrator

Over the years, I have become proficient in administering several flavors of UNIX. I have found that insights gained in one operating system often times will apply to other operating systems. Here are several technologies that I have had the pleasure of working with: directly.

  • RedHat Enterprise Linux
  • CentOS
  • Solaris (SPARC and x86)
  • Compaq Tru64 UNIX
  • Microsoft Active Directory

Database Administrator

Early on in my career, I learned Oracle database administration on Oracle 8.0. I learned RAC administration on Oracle 11g by leading an upgrade of 4 clusters. Even today, I manage Oracle 19c databases running in Docker containers. My experience with databases include:

  • Oracle Database
  • MySQL
  • SQL Server
  • Sybase
  • Microsoft Access

Application Developer

I have always been fascinated with programming. Even as a kid, I spent a lot of time experimenting with BASIC programming language, on an Atari 400 computer. In the early 2000’s, I wrote a Java-based data integration system, using JMQ.

Most recently, I led a project to create a custom application for tracking nationwide field inventory. Working with a mobile app developer, developing in Xamarin/C#, we negotiated several API endpoints. I developed the JSON-based API endpoint using object-oriented PHP and MySQL, which provides a backend for the Android-based scanners, and interfaces with an ERP system.

Even though I am most comfortable in shell scripting, PHP, SQL and HTML, I also have some experience in Java, C#, and VBA. I’m currently using Docker CE for containerization, but am very interested in learning more about Kubernetes, DevOps, and cloud technologies.
